It all started with the love of computers, only after I had my ‘fair share’ of using the same. I mostly used computers at my places of employment….
When did it all start and how?
It all started somewhere during the fall of 2017 when I realized that I have developed an abundance of love for computers. This love for computers played a phenomenal role in my workplace as one of my KPA’s (Key Performance Areas) was that of operating a personal computer. I felt like I wanted to go beyond being just a ‘user’ and started to ‘ask questions’ about what was happening ‘under the hood’. I started to search around until I came across the concept of coding and/or programming. After I was informed about how this skill was of extreme necessity, given concepts like the 4IR (4th Industrial Revolution), I became convinced that I had to teach myself this skill.
The following are a few lines of code (markup) that I wrote when I started to teach myself Web Development. The code was written on 24th October 2017.
I kept on practising, the following was written on 18th November same year.
I did not have adequate time to fully concentrate on my self-teaching program, neither did I have some form of ‘Mentorship’. I relied entirely on what the internet has to offer, in the form of tutorials on Youtube, free PDF’s and sites like W3Schools, Freecodecamp and others. Imagine having to juggle between my fulltime job, family, studies (studying Law at the University of South Africa) , ministry, community assistance (NGO) and other necessary tasks, above all, having to allocate/ create time for coding as a newly discovered passion. However, my vision became clearer and clearer and it is then that I felt I was kinda ‘addicted’ to coding. This was proven by the fact that when I felt I was in a bad space for whatever reason, should I get to my ‘development environment’. my feeling would immediately change for the best.
